8/7/2009 Tesco Express opens at City Exchange

A NEW supermarket marked its opening in Liverpool city centre by donating £500 to the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo’s Liverpool Unites children’s charity.

Bosses said the launch donation was part of Tesco’s commitment to supporting communities.

The money will be used to assist the Rhys Jones Memorial Fund, as well as other local charities and community groups.

Liverpool Unites is a charity which aims to positively engage children and young people by inspiring them to break the cycle of crime and poverty, giving them hope, purpose and ambition for a brighter future.

Tom Woolley, from Liverpool Unites, said: “We are delighted we will benefit from the opening of the new store, and would like to thank Tesco for this donation.”

The Tesco Express store, in City Exchange, Old Hall Street, opened for the first time to customers yesterday morning.

Tesco recruited 12 staff from the area to work in the store, with most of the employees living within one mile.

Store manager Andy Wood said: “We have recruited a great team of people, and I am looking forward to working with my new staff.

“We are delighted to be opening a Tesco Express store in Liverpool, and look forward to playing an active role in the community.
