Downing have now completed this ambitious project to completely revitalise over seven acres of largely unused city centre space by providing a highly sustainable and truly mixed use regeneration scheme. Taking disused buildings such as the former Oxford Street Maternity Hospital, the Myrtle Street Children’s Hospital and the Eye and Ear Hospital, Downing, through a combination of sensitive new build and sympathetic restoration and refurbishment, have created a new area that integrates and strengthens the heart of the City’s Cultural Quarter and the University District.

Located between Liverpool’s two Cathedrals and adjacent to Hope Street and the Philharmonic Hall, these formerly redundant sites are now home to restaurants, bars, small retail businesses, the City of Liverpool Community College Arts Centre, stylish city centre apartments and over 1,000 en-suite study bedrooms for students. The restoration of listed buildings and new build development s have created a thriving community with a unique character of its own, on a scale unprecedented in the city centre for decades.

The final phase, Lennon Studios, now provides 183 study bedrooms and 62 city centre studio apartments. This was the birthplace of John Lennon and the conversion which brings this well known landmark back into use is a fitting monument to one of the city’s best loved sons.
